These days there is a lot of concern about saving energy. This is even more important nowadays because we are already seeing firsthand the effect of our abuse and misuse of the environment. You can begin by using your appliances at home wisely to save energy and also to help in saving the environment.

You have to be an informed consumer so you have to be knowledgeable about brands of appliances that are built to conserve energy. For instance, you have to know the difference between energy-saving convection heaters and standard baseboard heaters.

Change how you use your appliances during different seasons. In colder weather, slightly turn down the thermostat. Install tempered glass doors on a fireplace to reduce heat loss. On the other hand, during hot and sunny weather, draw curtains and close blinds to conserve the cool air inside the home. This would reduce the need for fans or air conditioning. Portable air conditioning can also help in reducing your electric bills as these may sufficient in keeping the bedroom cool. Choose this over more expensive cooling appliances.

Keep your appliances clean so that they will maintain their efficiency. For instance, regularly replace or clean furnace air filters once a month. Clean the coils of your fridge. These are the ones that dissipate heat from the fridge. If they’re covered with grime, they will work less. Clean coils would ensure that the fridge will run more consistently and longer.
